Christ Church was founded by German families in what is now Tinicum Township.    In the 18th century we were worshiping in a log church. By the 19th c. we were joined by a Presbyterian congregation, which became Tinicum Reformed, now Tinicum United Church of Christ (UCC).

The Brick Church, altered over the years by renovations and restored after a fire in 1907, still stands and houses Tinicum UCC.

The Lower Tinicum Union cemetery  surrounds the Brick Church and, with the Hillpot Cemetery, is under the care of the Lower Tinicum Union Cemetery organization. This group maintains close ties with Christ Lutheran and Tinicum UCC, caring for the grounds and graves, and maintaining the cemetery records.

Prominent names from our history are Frankenfield, Trauger, Gruver, Hager, Meyers, Wismer and Fox (Fuchs).

Over the years the community we served was known as Wormansville, and we drew from Ottsville (Red Hill), Point Pleasant, Upper Black Eddy, and Pipersville.

At one time there was a small Lutheran church at Red Hill (Ottsville), but its history is sketchy, and we have not been able to find any connection with this little congregation that has faded into history.

Some families migrated across the Delaware River. The communities of Frenchtown and Milford, New Jersey are just across the river from Bucks County, and folks would move over and back to marry, work, for school and for church.

Christ's Church is just one of several historical congregations in the area. If your ancestor was not part of Christ's Church, Pipersville, and lived in the greater Tinicum/Pipersville/Ottsville/Pt Pleasant area, they may've been part of  another church family.  We share many of the historical Bucks County surnames.   There are seven Lutheran congregations that are part of the Palisades Lutheran Cluster:

-Upper Tinicum Lutheran.  Many members of Christ's ELC are buried in this congregation's cemetery, located on Upper Church Road. Upper Tinicum is the closest of the seven congregations.

-Evangelical Lutheran Durham: located on the hill above Rt. 412, west of the Delaware River.

-St Peter, Reigelsville. Just off Rt. 32/River Road.

-Trinity, Springtown (Coopersburg).  On rt 212,  just west of Springtown.

-Christ, Springtown. On rt 212 in the heart of Springtown.

-St Luke of Ferndale. On Church Rd. between rts 412 and 611.

The Palisades' Cluster website (www.engageinfaith.org) has a Links page that will take you to each congregation's homepage, and contact information.

Good luck in your search!
